چکیده

We present a large sample of Hand K-band spectra of 32 optically line-luminous central cluster galaxies. We find significant rovibrational H2 emission in 23 of these galaxies as well as H recombination and/or [FeII] emission in another 5. This represents a fourfold increase in the number of molecular line detections known. A number of the detections are of extended emission (5–20 kpc). In several objects we find significant [SiVI] emission that appears to correlate with the strength of high ionization lines in the optical (e.g. [OIII]). This comprehensive sample builds on previous work and confirms that warm (1000–2500 K) molecular hydrogen is present wherever there is ionized material in the cores of cooling flows and in most cases it also coincides with CO molecular line emission.

Molecular Hydrogen and Paschen-alpha Emission in Cooling Flow Galaxies

We present near-infrared spectra obtained to search for Paα and molecular hydrogen lines in edge-darkened (FR I-type) radio galaxies with bright Hα emission in the redshift range 0.0535 < z < 0.15. We find that all three galaxies in our sample (PKS 0745-191, PKS 1346+26, & PKS2322-12) which are associated with strong cooling flows also have strong Paα and H2 1–0 S(1) through S(5) emission, whil...

Cooling flows , central galaxy – cluster alignments , X - ray absorption and dust

We present the analysis of pointed ROSAT PSPC observations of five of the most luminous, intermediate redshift (0:1 < z < 0:15) clusters of galaxies detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The PSPC data are combined with optical CCD images and spectra to examine the relationship between clusters and their central cluster galaxies (CCGs). Abell 1068, Abell 1361 and Abell 1664 contain three of the ...

Cold molecular gas in cooling flow clusters of galaxies

The results of a CO line survey in central cluster galaxies with cooling flows are presented. Cold molecular gas is detected with the IRAM 30m telescope, through CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission lines in 6-10 among 32 galaxies. The corresponding gas masses are between 3.10 and 4.10 M . These results are in agreement with recent CO detections by Edge (2001). A strong correlation between the CO emiss...

Observations of Vibrationally - Excited Molecular Hydrogen in Cluster Cooling Flow Nebulae

We report the results of Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS and WFPC2 imaging of emission-line nebulae in the central galaxies of three clusters of galaxies purported to host massive cooling flows, Perseus (NGC1275), Abell 2597, and PKS0745-191. The spectral signature of vibrationally-excited molecular hydrogen has been seen in every galaxy searched thus far that is central to a cluster cooling flow...

Exciting molecular hydrogen in the central galaxies of cooling flows

The origin of rovibrational H2 emission in the central galaxies of cooling flow clusters is poorly understood. Here we address this issue using data from our near-infrared spectroscopic survey of 32 of the most line-luminous such systems, presented in the companion paper by Edge et al. (2002). We consider excitation by X-rays from the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM), UV radiation from you...
